History of Old Town. If we came to Prague a thousand years ago, we would find a vast market in places where today is the Old Town Square. It was located right on the way from Prague Castle to Vysehrad. People started to build the first houses on the roads connecting these two fortresses. Old Town. The Old Town (Staré Město) is steeped in history. From the 9th century onwards, merchants from all over the world would meet here, at the crossroad of trade routes. The southern part of Old Town is mainly a maze of narrow streets and arcaded courtyards that conceal gabled houses, cheerfully painted shopfronts, churches, and taverns.
U Medvidku is a traditional Czech pub and brewery located a few minutes walk from both the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square . U Medvidku dates from 1466. Old Town Square has always been the center of the town’s public life. The Town Hall was here. General meetings were held here. Town criers read the decrees of the king here. Convicts were executed here. The most famous execution on the square occurred in 1621. The hangman Jan Mydlar beheaded 27 leaders of the uprising against the Habsburgs.

Another Prague building adorned with sgraffito is Dům U Minuty, the House of the Minutes, a minute’s walk from the Prague Astronomical Clock on Old Town Square. The present building was completed in 1564, and the stunning sgraffito friezes, depicting scenes from the Bible and Greek mythology, were added after 1600.

Old Town Hall Tower is one of the most famous sights in Prague. At 66 meters (216 feet) tall, the tower provides stunning views of the city.
